Sometimes the most important thing we can offer a member is not a transaction. It is a moment to pause, breathe, and feel safe enough to say, “I don’t know what to do next.”
Recently, a newer member came into our Port Townsend branch and asked for a cashier’s check for the full balance of her savings. On the surface, it seemed like a straightforward request. But after the transaction was completed, she hesitated. Then she shared that she didn’t feel comfortable taking the money out after all. She asked if she could redeposit the check because, in her words, her money felt safer in the account.
Lori sensed there was more behind the moment and gently asked if everything was alright. She offered the member a private space to talk, and together they stepped into the conference room.
There, the member became emotional and shared that she was carrying far more than a banking decision. She was dealing with workplace conflict, a separation, a recent eviction, and uncertainty about what came next. It was a lot for anyone to hold alone.
Recognizing that she needed more support, Lori connected her with Darrell and helped schedule a follow-up appointment. After meeting with him, the member left the branch looking noticeably more at ease. She expressed appreciation for the guidance she received and shared that she felt more hopeful and more confident about her financial future.
Since then, she has secured housing and begun to move forward with renewed stability and optimism.
This WOW story is a powerful reminder that the work we do is not only about accounts and transactions. It is also about paying attention, making space for real conversations, and helping people find their footing again when life feels uncertain.
We are proud of Lori, Darrell, and the Port Townsend team for showing what care and coordination can mean in a member’s life.
