WOW Story: The People Part of Banking

Money Minute Tip

There are some moments in life when even the simplest tasks feel heavy.

Recently, Matt at our Port Orchard branch helped a member with the distribution of funds and closure of her mother’s accounts following her passing. It was a practical matter that needed attention, but it came during a season of grief and transition that no amount of paperwork can make easy.

Matt approached the interaction the way he approaches so many things at Peninsula: with compassion, patience, and genuine care. He understood that this wasn’t just about account closure forms or balances. It was about helping someone move through a difficult moment with a little more clarity, a little less stress, and the reassurance that they didn’t have to navigate it alone.

After everything was completed, the member sent a note to share her gratitude. She wrote:

“Thank you, Matt and the team at the Port Orchard branch, for caring about the people-part of banking. You made a difference during a difficult time. I will always remember the feeling of laughter and joy that I would never expect to receive while banking.”

That note says so much about the kind of experience we hope to create every day. Banking will always involve transactions, documents, and details. But at its best, it is also personal. It happens in the middle of life, during milestones, setbacks, fresh starts, and losses.

We’re grateful to Matt and the Port Orchard team for showing what it looks like to lead with empathy. In moments like this, the work is about more than getting things done. It’s about helping someone feel seen, supported, and cared for when they need it most.
