Sometimes the best financial solution is not the one a member originally came in asking for.
Recently, a couple visited one of our branches, hoping to refinance their $100,000 home equity line and access an additional $100,000 to build a shop. It was an exciting goal, and at first glance, the request seemed straightforward. But there was more than met the eye in our members’ situation.
As our team reviewed the members’ overall financial picture, they discovered that more than $108,000 in unsecured debt had built up over the past three years, much of it tied to the husband operating his business through personal credit. That changed the conversation.
Instead of simply moving forward with more borrowing, our team worked closely with the members to step back and look at what would best serve them long term. It wasn’t the outcome they had originally hoped for, but after seeing the full picture, the members agreed it was the right one. Together, we developed a plan to consolidate the unsecured debt first.
The impact was significant. Their minimum monthly payments dropped by over half of the $4300 that they were previously paying. That significant reduction created breathing room in their budget and gave them something even more valuable than immediate access to more funds: a stronger financial foundation.
Building the shop is still part of our members’ future. But now, they have a clearer path to get there — one built on stability, lower monthly pressure, and room to save with purpose.
This story is a great example of what thoughtful financial guidance can look like. Sometimes helping means saying, “Let’s pause and make sure the next step is the right one.” We’re proud of our team members for taking that approach and helping these members move toward their goals in a healthier, more sustainable way.
